The lemma is only recorded in glosses. On the meaning cf. BTS, and Pheifer (1974,n.830), and Rusche (1996,P168), who follows Meritt's interpretation (1954,139): "a kind of round cake made with honey"; he refers to Gloss.Lat. 4,357: PASTILLUM EST IN SACRIS LIBI [LIBUM = 'Kuchen'] GENUS ROTUNDI. Since we have no proof that honey was used to flavour pills in Anglo-Saxon times, or in which context the word itself was used, we cannot determine if it is a loan word or a native term. The OED (s.v. honey 7a.) gives two identifications: (a) is consistent with our meaning and the OE records; (b) indicates a loan translation: "tr. L. MELIMELUM, Gr. ,μελίμηλον‘ a sweet-apple, an apple grafted on a quince’ (Liddell and Sc.)."
