    Lindheim bases the identification in the literal meaning of the OE plant name: wylle 'well, Brunnen' (1941,n.169).

    Etymology: cf. reference to wet habitat (wylle).

  • Comment on (B): Trigonella foenum graecum L., fenugreek, Bockshornklee

    Identification based on the L lemma: cf. Dur 169 (BENE GRECIO vylle-cerse), ClSt 209/413 (FENEGRECIA: wyllecærse), Laud 1295 (SCUBRICIA.I. wellecarse) and the respective notes as well as our notes to HA and PD. The relationship of FENUM GRAECUM (cf. André, s.v.) with 'watercress, Brunnenkresse' is unclear; most likely it is the result of erroneous glossing. Banham (1990, 213) tentatively suggests that the similar habitus and flavour of these plants are the reason for the equation.

    Etymology: not clear. None of the popular names gives a hint whatsoever.
