Cf. WW 463/33: ORIGANUM feltwurma; the name →felt-wurma (probably for feld-, open land, plain) suggests a wild species, probably Origanum vulgare L., wild marjoram, Dost. The simplex wurma could therefore denote M. hortensis, a garden plant. Cf. →wurmille and Holthausen's entry (1974, s.v.).

Cockayne (1961,II,412) suggests Isatis tinctoria L., woad, Färber-Waid; but since wurma denotes the dog whelk (cf. Holthausen 1974, .s.v.), we can assume that the plant name would not denote I. tinctoria, which gives an indigo-like dye, but rather Rubia tinctorum L., madder, Echte Färberröte (cf. [LINTO wrætte]). Also cf. BTC s.v. wyrmfāh.
