  • Comment on (A): Genista tinctoria L., dyer's grenweed, Eiblatt-Ginster

Cf. the ModE popular names for G. tinctoria: wood waxen, wood wax (Britten / Holland 1886,499).

According to Holthausen (1974, s.v. weaxe) the primary word is identical with the one of OE weald-weaxe 'tendon, cartilage, Sehne, Knorpel', OHG walto-wahso 'muscle, Muskel'; the lit. translation would therefore be 'wood-tendon, Holzsehne', a name which perfectly describes the stringly, woody stems of the plant; cf. the G popular names Baisream, Eisenkraut, Wildes Holz (Marzell 2000,II,608). Also cf. Britten / Holland (1886,499): "[Woodwex] 'Hath many tough branches proceeding from a woodie roote.' Ger. 1134, Prior, p. 254."
