  • Comment on (A): Verbena officinalis L., vervain, Echtes Eisenkraut

Identification is based on the L plant name PERISTEREON (cf. André 1985, s.v). D'Aronco (1998,53) and Van Arsdall (2000,179) accept this interpretation.

  • Comment on (B): Lycopus europaeus L., gipsywort, Wolfstrapp

Identification is based on the L plant names COLUMBINA and PERISTEREON (cf. André 1985, s.v.), equally accepted by D'Aronco (1998,53) and Van Arsdall (2000,179).

  • Comment on (C): ??? Aquilegia vulgaris L., columbine, Akelei

This identification is proposed by de Vriend (1984,303): "The names PERISTERON and COLUMBINA and the explicit reference to pigeons indicate that Aquilegia vulgaris is meant; cf. the OED s.v. columbine sb. 2. Verbana officinalis is described in IV." Pollington (2000,111) follows this identification and provides a more detailed explanation. In the OED there is no explanation as to why berbene should mean A. vulgaris; Pollington deduces the plant name from the yet extinct ModE name 'culverwort'. None of these explanations are convincing.
