  • Comment on (A): Hordeum vulgare L., barley, Mehrzeilige Gerste

The meaning of the OE lemma is clear but L lemma has been widely discussed, Pheifer (1974, n. 645) summarises the discussion: "MANTICUM: ? for MANTICA 'wallet', confused with MANUA or MANIPULUS 'sheaf' [...] beouua(e)s, gsg. of *bēo(w) 'barley' (=ON bygg) suggests Gildas 76/11 MANUM PLENAM HORDEI, quoting VL (?) [VL = VETUS LATINA] Ez. 13:19 (Vulg. PUGILLUM HORDEI), cited by Schlutter, AJP xxix.443."
