  • Comment on (A): Isatis tinctoria L., woad, Färberwaid

L FUCUS = 'a lichen species producing a red dye; eine zum Rotfärben gebrauchte Flechtenart', 'red color; die rote Farbe'; also cf. Biggam (1997,283-285). On IACINTHO etc. cf. Is. 17,9, 15: HYACINTHUS HERBA EST HABENS FLOREM PURPUREUM. SANDIX = old name of I. tinctoria (cf. Marzell 2000,2,1047).

[1]:

Cf. our note on Cp, 1810(S 70).

[2]:

Also cf. SANDIX wyrt (s.v. wyrt). the gloss SANDIX weard (etc.) could be a corrupted wyrt oþþe wad. Cf. CGL 5,330,38 SANDIX FUCI GENUS EST and CGL 5,394,37 SANDIX FRUGI [sic] GENUS. Pheifer"s eplanation (A.950) seems not plausible: "(CGL ii, p.xiii) SANDIX HERBA APTA TINCTURAE QUAM UULGUS UUARANTIAM UOCANT suggests a Germanic plant-name, perhaps from IE. *wer- "twist" (IEW 1152ff)". Dental additions to this root are not recorded in Pokorny (-iew). Also cf. Marzell (2000,2,1047f): "Daneben [neben *waid] stehen germ. Bildungen mit -zd- oder -sd- in got. *wizdila oder *wiz-dilo [...] Deminutivum zu *wizds, *wizd, *wizda oder *wizdo = ags. [...] weard "sandix"".

[3]:

MS B: hataþ wad.

[4]:

Cont.: genim weod[obende] wisan 7 hegerifan; the MS has weode wisan; Cockayne (1961,iii,17,n.a) suggests wad wisan. Cf. wēod and wudu-bind.
