For ume? Schmitt (1908,94) suggests the word is a writing error for hunan. The context of the occurrence suggests a scribe with very little concentration: genim uman 7 eac gecrypte handfulle 7 medmicelne bollan fulne ealaþ, bewyl þrimme þæt ealo on þære wyrte. It should read either 'Take a closed hand full of uma' which would make 7 eac redundant; or it should read 'Take uma and a closed hand full of ...'; was this the case, there is a plant name or another ingredient missing after handfulle. Cockayne's translation (1961,II, 277), "take 'uman', and also a contracted hand full of it" seems altogether wrong.

If the OE lemma is an erroneous hunan it denotes Ballota nigra L. ([LINKTO hune). If, like suggested above, another ingredient was left out by the scribe it is not certain if uman refers to a plant name at all because on þære wyrte can only refer either to uman or to the missing word but not to both.
