N.: "J, getridwet spare. Triowed "treed", is identified by Meritt (FL 104) as the past participle of a verb made from triow "tree, stake, staffs", predecessor of the modern verb tree "to fit with a handle." Isidore"s phrase for the lemma HASTA is CONTUS CUM FERRO. The glossator expresses this, not as "speared shaft", but as "shafted spear"."
