    Theoretically any tree or shrub with thorns could be denoted by this plant name. According to place name research (e.g. Smith 1956, Gelling 1984) the name most often denotes the hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.), Biggam (1998,143ff.) puts this into perspective: “some of the thorns in the boundary clauses of Anglo Saxon charters were not hawthorns, but the majority of them probably were”.
