Cf. Hunger (1935,168): XCIX: CINOGLOSSA = C. officinale; also Dur 119 (CYNOGLOSSA ribbe) and Laud 280 (CANIS LINGUA.I.ribbe) and the respective notes; also cf. the comment on P. lanceolata.
CANIS LINGUA, CYNOGLOSSA and LAPELLA are old names for C. officinale (cf. Marzell 2000,1,1296) the confusion with P. lanceolata could go back to Dioscorides, where kynoglosson is synonymous with arnoglosson (GK for P. lanceolata, cf. Berendes 1902,221); also cf. Is., 17.9.50: ARNOGLOSSOS, ID EST AGNI LINGUA, QUAE A ROMANIS PLANTAGO DICITUR (cf. Rusche 1996,589,C8). Therefore it is quite likely that OE ribbe was used as name for C. officinalis only in glosses and the medico-botanical literature.
For the HA D'Aronco (1998,45) suggests that the error in translation (ribbe) may have resulted from the poor illustrations in the model the OE translator has used.

The reference to the veined leaves (cf. LB) of the plant are only valid for P. lanceolata: there is no G or ModE name for C. officinale which is motivated by 'vein' (cf. Marzell and Britten / Holland): Therefore ribbe must originally have denoted P. lanceolata; when the concept of the 'veined leaves' lost its importance, the name was also applied to C. officinale because of its tongue-shaped leaves. Another indicator for this theory is OHG ribba which denotes P. lanceolata (Pritzel / Jessen 1882,291); in NHG P. lanceolata shares the name Hundetunge (East Friesian, cf. Pritzel / Jessen 1882,291) with C. officinale [1] but none of the names that refer to the veined leaves. According to Fischer (2001,278) L QUINQUENERUIA only denotes P. lanceolata.
Etymology: related to OE ribb 'rib, Rippe'; cf. Hegi (1906,VI,183): "Da beim Spitzwegerich die Blattnerven (Rippen) besonders stark hervortreten, heißt er auch Ribbeckeblätter (Schaumburg), Siebenrippen (Hessen), [...] Ripplichrut, Rossrippe (Schweiz)." Also cf. ModE ribwort.
