    Deegan (1988: 273) specifies the source for this plant name: "This is reminiscent of the story told by Bede, describing how the moss from the cross erected by King Oswald at Heavenfield cured a broken arm: sumne dæl ealdes meoses, þe on þom halgan treow aweaxen wæs."
