The source is Dioskorides III,24 (Berendes 1902,275f.) where Eryngium maritimum L.; sea holly; Stranddistel is described: "Von diesen [= den Stengeln] aus gehen Zweige, welche an der Spitze runde Köpfchen tragen, die ringsum von sehr spitzen, festen Dornen sternförmig umgeben sind." This passage describes the trilobate perianth which grow into spikes (cf. for example the depiction in Polunin 1997, plate 83). Therefore only BT's (s.v. pīl) translation "sharp and thorny prickles" is correct, Cockane wrongly translates "sharp and thorny hairs"; equally wrong is ClH (s.v.pīl "hairs of plants"). In his dictionary Holthausen (1974) introduced a new lemma pil 'plant hair, Pflanzenhaar' (to L PILUS 'hair, Haar') besides pīl 'barb, Spitze' (to L PĪLUM 'spear, Wurfspieß'). In ClH (1960) the meaning "hairs of plants" has to be subsstituted by "prickles"; in Holthausen pil has to be deleted and its meaning has to be added to the entry pīl.
