Old-English: archentille, argella, argentilla, argentillae, argentille,
Latin (Machine generated): AQUILEIA, CAMICULA, CAMICULO, CARNICULA,
↑ topFor the L lemmata AQUILEIA (Aquilegia vulgaris L., columbine, Gewöhnliche Akelei; cf. André 1985, s.v.) and CAMICULA, etc. (probably erroneous for CANICULATA, Hyoscyamus L., a species of henbane, eine Art Bilsenkraut; cf. André 1985, s.v.) there is no previous connection to ARGENTILLA, which has to be the source for OE argentille. Hunt (1989,65) hesitantly equates CANICULA with Potentilla anserina L., silverweed, Gänsefingerkraut which also resembles L ARGENTILLA (cf. André 1985, s.v.).
The best basis for idetification therefore is ML ARGENTILLA which probably denotes Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim.; cf. Diefenbach 1867, s.v: "VLMARIA (I.MEDUSIUM, ARG-, POTENTILLA MAIOR, BARBA CAPRAE [...]) geißbart [...], johanniswedel". According to Marzell (2000,II,439) these G plant names refer to F. ulmaria. This is supported by the frequent equation of ARGENTILLA with APIATA:[1] e.g. CGL 3,587,20.

According to Marzell (2000,II,439) APIPHILON is an old name for Filipendula ulmaria.
L ARGENTILLE.
Identification according to BTS, probably because of early ModE 'argentil', 'parsley-piert'. The OED, though, records the first occurrence for 1579. The MED has no entry.
