  • Comment on (A): Panax L., ginseng, a species of ~, Ginseng, eine Art von ~

OPOPANAX = Gk όπóς 'sap, Saft'. Cf. Georges (2007, s.v. OPOPANAX) and (s.v.): "PANACEA, AE, f. u. PANACEA, IS, n. u. PANAX, ACIS, m. (πανάκεια, πανακες, πάναξ, eig. alles heilend, daher: I) eine erdichtete Pflanze, die für alles helfen soll, Panazee, Allheilkraut, [...] II) die auch LIGUSITICUM SILVESTRE gen. Pflanze [...] III) eine Pflanze, Heilwurz (Pastinaca opopanax L.)". Also cf. Dioskorides III,55 (Berendes 1902,295) and Fischer-Benzon (1998,67). Further cf. the Dresden gloss (OEG 73a,6) PANACE.I. luuestice. The meaning provided in BT (s.v. panic)[1] 'a sort of millet; panicum' goes, as the L forma in PD confirm, back to a confusion with L PĀNĪCUM 'Italian millet, italienische Hirse' (cf. Georges 2007, s.v.), which is not related to PANAX.
