  Identification based in the plant names 'rattle, Rassel'. In the OED (s.v. rattle, sb.1.3) a connection of ModE and OE plant name is doubtful because of the late first recording (1578). Nevertheless, a G equivalent could have been used as early as the 12th century: cf. Marzell (2000,1,184): "rasela, razela 12.Jh.: Hildeg. Phys. 2, 174. Ob unsere Pfl. [= Klappertopf] damit gemeint ist, steht nicht ganz fest [...], ist aber sehr wahrscheinlich, da unsere Pfl. auch heute noch im Rheinischen, dessen Pfl.nn Hildegard gebraucht, Rassel heißt."
