The habitat of the plant seems to have played a major role for medical use. In the LB we have grundeswelge sio þe weaxeþ on worþigum (i.e. the plant grows on places surrounded by buildings), and grundeswelge þe on eorþan weaxeþ ('grows on the earth'), which could be seen as different to the plant growing on roofs (HA: grunde swylige [...] byþ cenned on hrofum); similar: grundeswylige sēo þe on ærenu[m] wexeþ. IDROGIAS is a corrupted Gk ήριγέρων[1]; cf. the various names in the L HA (Howald / Sigerist 76,22 and the respecitve note): ERIGERON, YDOSGEROS, YDROGERON.
Etymology: The lit. translation is 'pus gobbler, Eiterverschlingerin', a name which matches the medical indications listed in the LB. But the forms recorded there (grundeswelge) indicate that in the 10th cent. the name was not associated with 'pus, Eiter' anymore but with OE grund ('ground, Boden'); the plant name then means 'ground gobbler, Grundverschlingerin'. The folk-etymological reinterpretation is easily comprehensible because S. vulgaris is one of the most wide spread pest plants. Cf. Hegi (1906,VI,789): "S. [...] vulgaris [...] findet sich mit Vorliebe auf frisch umgearbeiteten, fruchtbaren Böden [...]. Vielfach tritt sie dabei in solcher Dichtigkeit auf, daß die überwiegende Menge der Pflanzen nur Kümmerfor men auszubilden vermag." Also cf. Meritt (1968,11f.).
