Cockayne's identification (1962,III,328) has to be refuted because he bases his identification on ModE 'goatweed, goutweed', which derives from the L name and is most certainly no folk-etymological rendition of OE gōtwōþe; also cf. the G name 'Geißfuß' (L AEGOPODIUM) and 'PODAGRAKRAUT' (L PODAGRARIA). BT and ClH, s.v.v. follow Cockayne's identification.
