  • Comment on (A): Iris pseudacorus L., yellow iris, Sumpf-Schwertlilie

Cf. Förster (1974,132) and Lindheim's note on Dur 73; also cf. Hunger (1935,167): LXXXI: GLADIOLUM = Iris Pseudacorus. The plant belongs to the Iris family and was frequently denoted by L GLADIOLUS (cf. Marzell 2000,2,1020).

Etymology: According to Lindheim (1941,n.73) dissimilation from L GLADIOLA.

  • Comment on (B): Gladiolus communis L., field gladiolus, Gewöhnliche Siegwurz

In Dioscorides (IV,20) XIFION is G. communis (cf. s.v. →foxes fōt). The plant belongs to the Iris family and was frequently denoted by L GLADIOLUS (cf. Marzell 2000,2,691).

  • Comment on (C): Urginea maritime (L.) Baker, sea squill, Meerzwiebel

According to Hunger (1935,167) the L HA (ch. XLIII) describes U. maritima. L SQUILLA and BULBUS SCILLITICUS denote U. maritima. Pheifer (1974,n.920) explains the glosses with the fact that U. maritima has a bulbous root like the Iris. Equally L SQUILLA was glossed with NARCISSUS (CGL 3,614,62) which agein was glossed LILIUS (CGL 3,570,19).
