    Cf. Förster (1917,127); there are numerous vernacular names for O. acetosella composed with 'cuckoo, Kuckuck'; cf. for example Marzell (1917,186), who notes more than 30 NHG plant names. On ACCITULIUM, etc. cf. Wynn (1961,298): "A LL word indicating a bitter or sour plant, probably sorrel. Cf. Alphita (ed. Mowat,p.2): ACEDULA HERBA ACETOSA [...] Anglice sourdocke [...] Ultimately the word is probab­ly derived from CL ACIDULUS, sourish, tart; cf. Diefenbach, s.v. ACCEDULA." CALCICULIUM (? origin of CALCILUM) is probably a corrupted ACCITULIUM entstellt;[1] maybe names like PANIS CUCULI, CUCULOPANIS influenced this development.[2] ALERIA could be a corrupted ALLELUIA: cf. Diefenbach (1867, s.v.): "ALLELUIA; ALERNA […] hasenampffer […] kukeßlauch". In the DOE recorded s.v. gēac.

    Etymology: The first part of the plant name 'cuckoo sorrel' refers to the early bloom of this plant; the second to the sour taste of the leaves. Also cf. →monnes sūre.
