  • Comment on (A): ?? Clinopodium vulgare L., wild basil, Wirbeldost

The identification is based on the fact that OE →mistel can denote either Viscum album L. or C. vulgare. Cf. HA CXIX: "Wiþ heafod ece genim þas wyrte þe man ocimum 7 oþrum naman mistel nemneþ (Cockayne 1962,I,232). The model of HA has Gk ώκιμον, Ocimum Basilicum L., basil, Basilikum, which is not native to the British Isles an therefore was probably substituted with C. vulgare (cf. ModE wild basil). As eorþmistel occurs in the same recipe with →āc-mistel the name is probably used to denote the other 'mistel', C. vulgare, which is growing on the ground.
