BRITANNICA denotes a Rumex species but cf. →hæwen-hnydele; Biggam (1997,175f.) points out that the connection with BRITANNICA is based on the use against paralysis (failure of the legs), which is one symptom accompanying scurvey.
Etymology: The lit. translation is 'cow pat, Kuhfalden' (cū + slyppe 'dough, slime, Teig, Schleim'; cf. Holthausen 1974,s.v.). We can only comprehend this name if we consider that, for example, herdsmen, who want to denote the plant, won't refer to the early blooming yellow flowers but rather see the large, egg-shaped leaves, which gradually turn brown, as a major characteristic of the plant.
