  • Comment on (A): Tanacetum balsamita L., alecost, Balsamkraut

This plant was introduced in the 16th cent. (cf. Grigson 1974, s.v. costmary); Banham doubts the existence of foreign species and suggests local varieties, like Tanacetum vulgare L., tansy, Rainfarn or Chrysanthemum segetum L., corn marigold, Saat-Wucherblume as possible substitutes (cf. 1990,242) but the author of the Lacnunga did specify the use of →cost, æncglisc, possibly denoting a substitute.

    Etymology: L COSTUS.
