    Marzell (2000,3,355ff.) links collon-crōh to this plant and, based on OHG glosses like NIMPHEA collo, grensinc[1], explains: Grensing "bedeutet gewöhnlich Potentilla anserina [...], aber sehr oft findet sich auch das Lemma 'NIMPHEA', das wohl nur die Seerose bedeuten kann. An eine bloße Verwechslung ist bei der Verschiedenheit von Potentilla anserina und Nymphaea alba nicht zu denken. [...] Ferner ist Grensing eine Bezeichnung für Achillea millef.[2], die jedoch eine ganz andere Pflanze ist, vgl. dazu ags. collon-croh 'NYMPHAEA, ACHILLEA' (v. Lindheim 23)." L TIPHUS denotes some kind of water plant and is, therefore, suitable in this context.

    Lehmann (cf. 1907,23-26) gives several explanations, the interpretation based on 'water-jug, Wasserkrug' seems most plausible: variant of OHG quella 'well, Quelle'= OE *colle + OE crōg 'jug, Krug'; cf. accordingly the ModE name 'water can' (Britten / Holland 1886, s.v.) and the G name 'Seekanne' (cf. Marzell, 2000,3,358).
