Hoops (1889,71 and 74) suggests that bulut is a L loan wort derived from BALLOTA (gr. βαλλώτη, cf. Cockayne 1961,II,374). This is supported by the gloss BRESION bulut (WW 196/27), which is likely to be an eroneous form of L/Gk PRASSION, a name of B. nigra (cf. WW 299/23: PRASSION →hune). Also cf. Marzell (2000,1,537): "Bult Graßmann 182 [...] Bulte [...] Künstlich gebildete Gattungsnamen für Ballota. Sie gehen zurück auf die nl. Gl. hulft VEL bult 'MARUBIUM' (Diefenb.350a), worunter aber wohl Marrubium vulg. zu verstehen ist. Graßmann a.a.O. vermutet Entstehung aus 'BALLOTA'."
The identification 'Ragged Robin' provided by BT is based on a vague guess by Cockayne (1962,II,374) and lacks any scientifc basis.
