Blōstma always refers to a blossom of a certain plant, it never just means 'flower'. Cf. the L sources to, e.g.: HA 238/15 (Hunger 1935,159): FLOREM HABET PURPURE; to 152/25 (Hunger 1935,142): FLORES; to 178/5 (Hunger 1935,147): FLOS. The index entry in Biggam (2003,339) "blostm, 'flower, fruit' is misleading, as the passages referred to do not indicate the meaing 'fruit' at all.
Hwīte blōsman: blossom of Ligustrum vulgare L., privet, Rainweide. The source of this gloss is Ald. 1.192f.: "FLOS ES VIRGINEUS, QUI NESCIT DAMNA SENECTAE/ NEC CADIT IN TERRAM, CEU FRONDE LIGUSTRA FATESCUNT" Ehwald (1919, n.) compares it with "Verg.ecl. II 18 ALBA LIGUSTRA CADUNT." Cf. ClSt, L 252, and DOE, s.v., 2.
For the figurative use of the lemma cf. DOE, s.v., 1d.
