  • Comment on (A): Beta vulgaris L., beet, Rote Bete

    L BETA = Beta vulgaris L. (cf. André 1985, s.v.).

  • Comment on (B): Arctium lappa L., greater burdock, Große Klette

HA: L PERSONACIA and PROSOPIS[1] denote Arctium lappa L., greater burdock, Große Klette; only in HA XXXVII PERSONACIA is a synonym of OE bete. This erroneous translation might go back to the L model of the HA (cf. Howald and Sigerist 1927,36,24) where BETILOLEN is given as a Gallic synonym. De Virend (1984,297) doubts the identification B. vulgaris and refers to the illustrations, D'Aronco (1998,45) strongly supports this, she states: "The identification of the plant called PERSONACIA [...] is much discussed, but is generally identified as Arctium lappa L.".

  • Comment on (C): ? Stachys officinalis (L.) Trevis., betony, Echter Ziest

LA: Pettit (2001,2,LXI,231) notes that the recipe in LA might be related to a recipe in LB 3 (316/21-27); if so, beton could be a scribal error for betonican.

[1]:

PROSOPIS is listed as a synonym of PERSONACIA in the L HA (Howald and Sigerist 1927,36,21).

[2]:

MS HB: bete. In the phrase: þe man [...] 7 oþrum naman [...] nemneþ the OE plant name is in nearly all cases recorded in the nsg., the L plant name quite frequently so.

[3]:

MS bete; an emendation is not necessary because - Grattan and Singer even note this on their own - in lists the asg. is often substituted with an nsg.
