All L lemmata, except LAPATIUM (cf. our note) can denote P. major or P. lanceolata (cf. →ribbe); but the name 'way-broad, Wegbreite' only suits the leaves of P. major, cf. Marzell (2000,3,815), who describes the leaves as: "breit eiförmig, meist siebennervig". Pettit introduces and immediately rejects other attempts at identification (2001,CXXVII, 760), which belong to the occurrence LA 172/23: He does not agree with Chickering (1971,96), who identifies wegbrade as Plantago lanceolata L. because of the leave's resemblance with a spear and Glosecki (1989,132), who argues that wegbrade = wyrta modor, which will not have been a common image. He also rejects the identification 'dock' by Wardale (1935,24).
Etymology: To OE weg 'road, Weg' and brad 'broad, breit'; because of the plant's habitat and the shape of the leaves - in contrast to the the lanceolate leaves of P. lanceolata L., cf. |LINKTO lǣce-wyrt].
