  • Comment on (A): ? -, gum, Harz

Tēafur which has no L equivalent seems to define OE →lādsar, this is the translation of L LĀSER, which denotes a plant's resinous sap. Therefore tēafur should be translated with 'resin, Harz' and therefore could be used to explain the Dresden gloss CERUSSA whitleadteauer (OEG, 73c,14) in more detail; whitleadteauer glosses the last three words of the text FEL APRINUM CUM RESINA ET CERUSSA MIXTUM. CERUSSA denotes 'white lead, Bleiweiß' (cf. Varnhagen 1902,6), and teauer L RESINA 'resin, Harz'; but ClH (s.v.: "hwītlēadtēafor 'salve of white lead'", BTC, and Varnhagen (ibid.) interprete teauer as gloss for MIXTUM because it is written above this word.

Cont.: Eft nim ladsar, þæt [ys] teafur, and galpanj; Cockayne (1961,iii,88/20) reads Eft nim ladsar ƀ teafur, 7 galpanj; L text (Löweneck 1896,8/1): ITEM LASARIS, GALBANI; the missing L equivalent for teafur explains Löweneck"s emendation. In BT, s.v. teafor II, "Lchdm" has to be inserted before the occurrence III.86.20.
