    Cf. Meritt's note: "The gloss spir seems to have been induced by a confusion of CARACTER with CARECTUM and of GRAMMA with GRAMINA, for spir is followed by ł GRAMINA." This explanation is more plausible than Meroney's guess "Can spir be connected with OE spor 'track'? A few lines later Priscian etymologizes LITERA as LEGENDI ITER"[1]
